It was a gorgeous day today and we had the afternoon free. I thought it would be a nice day for a picnic at the creek. We started walking and quickly realized there was no longer a path. Only the hay, which was taller than Paul. I told him I was sorry, we would have to turn around, we could have a picnic at the park instead. He was bound to persevere. So we did, through the hay. After we passed the electric fence, I kept looking for a place in the fence to cross to head down the hill toward the creek. However, EVERY time I stopped at a promising place (half a dozen times), there was poison ivy everywhere! So, we had to go all the way down to the tunnel. When we finally got near there I looked down the hill and it looked like many jagger bushes had grown up. Again I apologized to Paul and told him we'd have to turn back. He talked me into persevering again.
Finally we made it to the creek! I put on his hip waders and he loved it! He could sit right in the creek and walk all over the place. He had fun throwing rocks. Joy stuck her toes in and threw some rocks too. I spread out our blanket and we had some melted chocolate chip cookies. Of course Cana came right over and laid her muddy, poison ivy covered self on our blanket.
I was determined that we would not return the way we came. We searched and found the old logging bridge and crossed the creek there. We headed up the hill and easily made it through the fence and into the field by the upper barn. We made it to the upper barn driveway and I thought we were home free. Until I realized I did not have a leash for Cana! How would I keep her safe on the road? Then I looked down; there in the mud at the bottom of the driveway was an old piece of baler twine. It was a miracle; we needed a leash for Cana and God gave us one. Paul thought that was really cool.
So we made our way...me, holding Paul's hand, with Joy on my back, the bag holding our drinks on my front, our blanket and a Walmart bag containing Paul's soaked hip waders looped through Joy's backpack, and Cana on a dirty string leash. What a sight we were! Several cars passed our entourage, including Pastor Linda. We made it home safely. Paul watched tv while I made dinner. When I went in to check on him, he was passed out! What a day!
